CITAZIONE AL VALOREIl soldato Ernest “Smoky” Smith dei Seaforth Highlanders of Canada guidò il suo gruppo di due
uomini nella traversata del fiume Savio durante la notte tra il 21 ed il 22 ottobre 1944. Pioggie
torrenziali fecero gonfiare le acque fino a raggiungere due metri nel giro di cinque ore, rendendo
impossibile il passaggio di carri armati e armi anticarro degli Alleati. Nonostante in numero ben
inferiore, il soldato Smith difese i suoi uomini dai carri armati, dai cannoni semoventi e dalla
fanteria, fino a quando il nemico, in disordine, batté in ritirata.
Al soldato Smith, per il suo coraggio straordinario ed abnegazione estrema in presenza del nemico

FOR VALOURPrivate Ernest “Smoky” Smith of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada led his group of two men
across the Savio River on the night of October 21-22, 1944. Torrential rain caused the river to rise
two metres in five hours, making it impossible for Allied tanks or anti-tank guns to follow. Greatly
outnumbered, Private Smith defended his group from enemy tanks, self-propelled guns and infantry
until the enemy withdrew in disorder.
For his outstanding bravery and daring act of valour in the presence of the enemy at the Savio
River, Private Smith was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross. |
À COEUR VAILLANTLe soldat Ernest «Smoky» Smith du Seaforth Highlanders of Canada et deux de ses hommes ont
franchi le fleuve Savio durant la nuit du 21 au 22 octobre 1944. Des pluies torrentielles avaient
fait monter le niveau du fleuve de presque deux mètres en cinq heures au point où il était impossible
pour les chars et les canons antichar des Alliés d’en faire autant. En position d’infériorité numérique,
le soldat Smith a défendu son groupe des chars, des canons automoteurs et des fantassins ennemis
jusqu’à ce que ceux-ci abandonnent et se replient en désordre.
Pour sa bravoure exceptionnelle et son geste de vaillance audacieux en présence de l’ennemi au
fleuve Savio, le soldat Smith a reçu la prestigieuse Croix de Victoria. |
